Marlborough Downs Challenge, 33 mile Ultramarathon

 

A single-day race starting at 9:00am. The route is a 32.69 mile loop with around 3000 ft of elevation

 

All competitors must register at Marlborough Leisure Centre to collect their race number. Registration will be open on the morning of the race from 7:30am to 8:30am. Competitors must also attend the race briefing at 08:45am so please make sure you allow plenty of time to register, and make your way to the start line which is a 5 min walk from the Leisure Centre. 

 

 

Marlborough Downs Challenge, 20 mile 


A single-day race starting at 10:30am. The route is a 18.94 mile loop with around 1500ft of elevation
 

All competitors must register at Marlborough Leisure Centre to collect their race number. Registration will be open on the morning of the race from 9:00am to 10:00am. Competitors must also attend the race briefing at 10:15am so please make sure you allow plenty of time to register, and make your way to the start line which is a 5 min walk from the Leisure Centre.

 

All entrants are asked to fill in the emergency contact, and medical information required on the back of your race number. It is mandatory that all runners wear their race number clearly on their front at all times during the race.

 

Facilities: The Leisure Centre has toilets, changing rooms and showers. A drop bag of clothes may be left at the Leisure Centre; this room will be occupied for most of the day but this is not supervised storage and the organisers will not be responsible for any loss or damage. The purchase of hot drinks and food is available on Marlborough High Street, five minuteswalk away. There will be tea/coffee and snacks at the finish up to 17:00pm for runners.

 

Parking

 

There is amble parking in the grounds of Marlborough College, SN8 1PA from 7.30am. Please follow the signs and the instructions of the parking marshals. Note – there is no parking on race day at Marlborough Leisure Centre

 

 

Race Start

 

Where: Marlborough College Parade Ground Area, adjacent to the car parking area. SN8 1PA

 

33 Mile Race briefing at 8:45. Race start 09:00  

 

20 Mile Race briefing at 10:15. Race starts at 10:30. 

 

We ask that all participants and supporters respect Marlborough College grounds. Please note there are no toilets at the START –  there are plenty of toilets available in the Leisure Centre. Any inappropriate use of the College grounds may prevent this event from taking place in the future and may result in your exclusion from the race.

 

Race Finish

 

Where: Marlborough Leisure Centre, Barton Dene, SN8 1PB.

 

Race finish for both races at 17:00.

 

Navigation: 

 

The races are self-navigation and competitors must ensure that they have a downloaded the route in hard copy or onto an electronic advice for use on the day of the race. It is your responsibility to ensure you are able to safely navigate the course. Do not assume that the person in front knows where theyre going!

These .gpx files are updated regularly and uploaded on to the Routes page of the website so always make sure you have the latest version. We will share the latest .gpx files with the pre-Race information which will be emailed out to all runners no later than 7 days before Race Day.

 

Mandatory kit list: The addition of a mandatory kit list is new for 2026.  

Runners will need to carry minimum kit of:

  • Water bottle or bladder (33 mile race)
  • Cup (optional, but will be needed if you want a checkpoint drink served other than in your water container (e.g. coke or squash).
  • Fully charged mobile phone with volume set to maximum.
  • Sufficient food for your race (e.g. gels, energy bars).
  • Survival bag or emergency foil blanket
  • Either:
    • paper maps of the course, to be carried at all times – YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN – either download the GPX files provided and print via your chosen app, or obtain the relevant OS sheets (OS Explorer sheet 157) marked-up with the route. These must either be on waterproof paper, or in a waterproof case / sleeves.
      OR
    • One independent electronic devices (e.g. GPS watch and smartphone), with sufficient battery to last for the full duration of the race (8 hours). You must carry a spare battery if necessary to achieve this.
  • Sunblock or additional warm clothes as dictated by weather conditions (at your own discretion).

Prizes and awards: There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd male and female in each distance. In each race there will also be age group prizes for Senior. V40, V50, V60. All finishers will receive the much sought after MDC souvenir mug from the White Horse Pottery – www.whitehorsepottery.co.uk.
